ECOFIN: Stress Tests, Euro Reform, Regulators On Agenda Monday
Date: 7-13-2010 Author: Smith, Geoffrey T. Visits: 142

Bank stress tests, new supervisory bodies for financial services and the first formal suggestions on how to improve the governance of the euro zone will all be on the agenda as European Union finance ministers convene for their regular monthly meetings in Brussels Monday and Tuesday.

The ministers and their heads of government had agreed only a month ago to publish exhaustive details of stress tests on their respective countries' banks, in an effort to put to rest fears that many have suffered crippling losses in this year's bond market turmoil and are struggling to stay alive.

The little information that has emerged from the banks being tested suggests that regulators' enthusiasm for transparency has waned in the meantime, and that the adverse scenarios being tested for aren't extreme enough to provide effective reassurance. As such, the meeting will give the ministers opportunity to either rebut the criticism or reaffirm their original commitment.
